'February''-Month of Bloodshed for Language

The language movement is a very important event in the history of Bengali nation as well as the world history. Bengali is our mother tongue. We have shedded a lot of blood and sacrificed many lives in 1952 to establish Bengali language. in Bangladesh. In history no nation in the world shedded blood except Bangladesh. In this respect, our mother tongue is exceptional in comparison to other language in the world.

So, now it is a matter of pride and great honour  (honor=US)  to Bengali Nation as UNESCO has declared the 21st February, the Martyrs Day, as the "International Mother Language Day".

Now the 21st February is considered a red letter Day. Now it is observed all over the world as the International Mother Language Day with great respect and enthusiasm. It is observed as a national mourning day in Bangladesh. On the day the national flag is hoisted half-mast in government buildings and offices in Bangladesh. People of classes bring out a procession named the "Provat Ferry" where they walk barefooted and sing the sad song, "Amar vayer rokte rangano ekushe February, ami ki vulite pari.....". They also place flowers and floral wreathes at the foot of the Shahid Minar to pay homage to the martys. Meetings, discussion, programmes, seminars and various cultural programmes and shows are organizes all over the country to to discuss and show the the significance of the day. Fairs and exhibitions are held at different places on the occasion of the day. Publication of books and pamphlets on the occasion is also a common event. Newspapers and magazines also bring out special issues. The TV and radio also air special programmes highlighting the importance of the day. The day is observed as a day of great significance in our national life.

It may be mentioned that Mother tongue is the best medium of commutation in the world. No language can be compared with mother language. Moreover, mother tongue is the most important component of nationality of a nation. Bengali is our first language and English is our second language. Although we should learn English in order to survive in the face of globalization but it should not denying mother tongue. The learning that is achieved in mother language is more effective than the learning in foreign language. Bangla Academy was setup to translate books written in other language into Bengali. Bangla Academy should play its due role.
